Toxic Toys?

Tens of thousands of Fisher Price toys have been recalled in the UK, due to potentially harmful levels of lead paint.
Toymaker Mattel, which owns Fisher Price, said that the toys should no longer be played with by children. Although it explained that no injuries had been caused, the company admitted that “excessive levels” of lead were involved.
Lead poisoning has been linked to a number of problems including vomiting, and even brain damage. Now Mattel has said that children should stop playing with the affected toys “immediately”. It added that a thorough investigation is being undertaken.
The toys involved were all made in China. They include a number in the Dora The Explorer range (including some Diego character toys), as well as a walkman type toy connected to the Lazy Town TV series.

Problems across the pond too....

The news comes on top of another announcement by Mattel in the US. There, almost a million products have been recalled. They include Big Bird, Elmo, Dora and Diego character toys. All were also made in China.
A statement released by Mattel’s British office said: “94,305 units of these products have been manufactured for the UK and Ireland. The toys were available nationwide from May 2007 to August 2007.
“If consumers have any of these products in their home they should stop using these immediately and contact the Fisher-Price UK consumer helpline on 01628 500303 or email helplineUK@Mattel.com who will arrange for the return of the items and a replacement toy of equivalent value."
