Pom Pom Snowman

This pom pom snow man is a friendly addition to the Christmas tree or window sill. He is so easy to make - your kids will want to make a whole snowman family!

You will need...

  • Cardboard
  • Four circular items that can be traced around (for example the base of a round jar), with approximate diameters of 5cm and 2cm, and 3cm and 1cm.
  • Wool
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Decoration - get creative and use pipecleaners, plastic eyes, sequins, buttons, glitter - whatever you can find at your local craft shop!

Method

pompom1. Create the base

  • Trace around the larger circular item
  • Place the smaller circular item in the centre of the circle and trace around it
  • Repeat the above steps to create two double circles
  • Cut out the circles. You will now have two donut shaped rings

pompoms2. Wrap the rings

  • Place the same-size rings together - but don't glue them
  • Cut wool into manageable lengths (about 2 metres). Hold one end of the wool outside the ring and wind the rest around the rings
  • As you use additional lengths, there is no need to tie them together, but make sure the ends are on the outside, not in the middle
  • Continue winding the wool until the cardboard is completely covered

pompoms3. From donut to pom pom…

  • When the rings are nearly full of wool, cut the wool around the edge of the rings and between the pieces of cardboard. The scissors won’t be able to cut through all the layers at once, so cut a few layers at a time.
  • Ring a length of wool between the two pieces of cardboard, around all the strands of wool, and tie it firmly together.
  • Remove the cardboard rings (cut them if necessary).
  • Trim any uneven lengths of wool to tidy up the pom poms.

pompoms4. Adding some personality

Glue the small and large pom poms together. Attach pipecleaners as arms, plastic eyes and any other decoration you choose.

Try making pom poms from different coloured wool, or use smaller or larger circles to make different-sized pom poms. Pom poms make great Christmas tree ornaments, puppets and hat decorations.
