FunPod Tried and Tested

Introduction

The FunPod is a box-like safety unit that lifts kids up to bench level. Unlike a chair or stool, children are protected on all sides, and the height can be adjusted as they grow. We gave the FunPod to four Supernanny readers to test for a month. Here’s what they thought…

Most kids love to help in the kitchen – cooking, crafting, banging saucepans… but it’s also the most dangerous room in the house. With 42,000 young children injured in kitchen accidents every year, any invention that promises to improve safety is a welcome addition for parents.

Family reviews

Uyen Chan

Isabelle, aged 4 and Helena aged 1

Uyen’s initial impression was mixed. “It felt safe for my children to use and was easy to store, but I felt it was a little too bulky. The wide base didn’t fit flush against some worktops so my kids had to stretch a bit.”

Her two kids reacted differently too. “Isabelle gets bored but Helena loves being in the FunPod because it helps her stand up. It’s a very funny sight when she bobs up and down and disappears inside the pod!"

Ruth Goodwin

Stan, aged 10 months

Ruth’s son loved every minute in the FunPod. “I gave Stan bits of cooking to do and he could feel involved in what was going on. It was perfect for his age because he hates to be sitting down or strapped into a highchair, and he’s bored of entertaining himself at floor level.”

She appreciated the safety aspect too. “It was sturdy and heavy – you could turn your back for a second and do something in the kitchen without worrying that they’d fall off, as you do with a stool or chair.”

She says the only drawback was the FunPod’s size. “It’s quite big so I would recommend buying the chopping board with it too to get maximum use out of the product.”

Jennifer and Derek Williams

Grandparents to Leto, aged 4 and Oskar, aged 3

Jennifer felt the FunPod was made for grandmas. “I let the kids do drawing and washing up with a bowl on that surface, and it’s really easy to keep clean and dry. It’s a good product for grandparents because they don’t have to lift kids up and down off a chair, and they know the kids are safe.

She says, “I have more time to bake cakes with the boys than their mums do, so it’s just what I need!”

Helen Foster

Florence, aged 3

For Helen, the FunPod’s ease of use was its best feature. “You can just plonk your child in there – no buckles or straps, and know they are safe.”

An unexpected benefit was the FunPod’s effect on Florence’s behaviour. “It encouraged her to concentrate on tasks because she couldn’t immediately walk away from the jigsaw or whatever we put in front of her.”

“It was also good for when you arrive home, as sometimes Florence objects to being transferred from the buggy to the floor, so this makes the transition into the house a bit easier.”

The only downside was the FunPod’s size. “It was quite heavy, so not easily portable up and down stairs. We tried it in both the kitchen and computer area and I think we could do with one in both rooms!”
