The British Skin Foundation is the only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting research into all skin diseases. Aiming to help the 8 million people in the UK with a serious skin condition, the BSF works closely with dermatology departments, patient support groups and the British Association of Dermatologists. Every penny we raise goes towards research and trying to find new treatments and cures for the hundreds of skin diseases that blight so many people’s lives.
I chose to work for a skin charity as I think skin problems cause people so much anguish, but there is still a lack of understanding about them. Many children experience bullying because of the way their skin looks, and often the emotional upheaval can be just as serious as the physical discomfort. I have been trained about all major skin diseases while at the British Skin Foundation and my role is to help educate people about skin disorders and how to look after their skin. I have worked in the not-for-profit sector in communications and information roles for five years, and live and work in London. Long weekends involve making a hasty retreat to the countryside, my favourite place being the north Norfolk coast, which cannot be beaten for fresh air, great beaches and country pubs.
