A healthy heart for two!

Exercise during pregnancy benefits not only the mother, but the baby too, according to a new study.

Research presented this week at a meeting of the American Physiological Society suggests that foetuses whose mothers exercise have significantly lower heart rates than those who don’t.

This study suggests that a mother who exercises may not only be imparting health benefits to her own heart, but to her developing baby’s heart as well,” said Dr Linda E May from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. "As a result of this pilot study, we plan to continue the study to include more pregnant women.”

The study followed ten pregnant women, five of whom did exercise and five of whom didn’t. Foetal movements, including breathing, body and mouth movements were tracked from 24 weeks until full-term, and Dr May said the results were very different.

Maternal exercise may be the earliest intervention to improve the heart of children and possibly the best.
